St George's German Lutheran Church dates from 1762 and is the oldest German church in Britain. It served as a religious centre for generations of German immigrants who worked in the East End until the First World War. During the Nazi period St George's pastor, Julius Rieger, set up a relief centre for Jewish refugees from Germany who were provided with references to travel to England.
St George's became redundant in the 1990s and passed into the ownership of the Historic Chapels's Trust in 1999. Since then it has undergone extensive refurbishment and repair work thanks largely to the £900,000 raised through grants from English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and other private trusts such as St Paul's German Evangelical Church Trust, as well as from private individuals including members of the former congregation.
Rt Hon Alan Beith MP Chairman and Dr Jennifer Freeman, Director of the Historic Chapels Trust welcomed the Duke and other guests, including a representative from the German Embassy to the reopening ceremony. Alongside Lutheran hymns and a selection of organ music Prince Nicholas of Preussen gave a brief talk outlining the church's historic royal German connections.
The family history records of the former congregation of St George's are now held at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets local history library, 277 Bancroft Rd, London E1 4DQ tel 020 7364 1290. The library is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
